Boat Trip to Rab Island from Opatija — Medieval Town & Sandy Beaches
Rab — The Crown Jewel of Kvarner
Rab is our most distant destination from Opatija — and arguably the most rewarding. The 40-45 minute speedboat ride takes you to an island where medieval architecture, genuine sandy beaches and Mediterranean vegetation come together in a setting that feels more Italian than Croatian.
The approach by boat is unforgettable: four ancient bell towers rising above terracotta rooftops, the old town built on a narrow peninsula, and the dramatic contrast between the barren northeast coast and the lush southwest side.
What to See on Rab
Rab Old Town — Three parallel streets run the length of this beautifully preserved medieval settlement, connected by steep stone stairways and lined with Romanesque churches and noble palaces. Climb the tallest bell tower for panoramic views.
Paradise Beach — One of the few genuine sandy beaches in Croatia. Fine sand, shallow water, and a sheltered position make it perfect for families. A true rarity on the predominantly rocky Adriatic coast.
Supertarska Draga — A quiet bay backed by olive groves and pine forest, offering peaceful swimming away from the crowds.
Komrčar Park — Beautiful green space with shaded paths through Mediterranean pine forest and viewpoints over the sea.
San Marino connection — Legend says a stonemason from Rab named Marinus founded the world's oldest republic in 301 AD.
Ideal Rab Itinerary
Morning departure from Ičići, scenic crossing past Cres through the Kvarner strait. Dock at Rab town harbour directly below the medieval walls. Explore the old town and climb a bell tower. Lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Afternoon at Paradise Beach or Supertarska Draga. Return trip with sunset views across Kvarner Bay.
Best months: June and September — warm enough for Paradise Beach but less crowded than peak summer.
