Griffon Vultures of Cres — See Europe's Rarest Birds by Boat

Europe's Magnificent Giants

Cres Island is home to one of the last remaining colonies of griffon vultures in Europe. These magnificent birds have a wingspan of up to 2.8 metres and can often be spotted soaring above the dramatic eastern cliffs of the island as your boat passes below.

Where to See Them

The vultures nest on the cliffs of the eastern coast of Cres, particularly in the area between Beli and Cres town. The cliffs rise 100-200 metres above the sea, and the birds use the thermal updrafts along the cliff face to soar effortlessly for hours.

Your skipper will slow the boat as you pass below the nesting cliffs, giving you time to spot the birds circling above. Binoculars are helpful but not essential — the birds are large enough to see clearly from the boat.

Why Cres Is Special

The Cres population is unique in the world — it's the only griffon vulture colony that nests on cliffs directly above the sea. Most other colonies nest inland. This makes the boat-based viewing experience truly one of a kind.

Conservation

The griffon vulture population on Cres has been carefully protected and monitored by the Beli Visitor Centre for decades. The population has stabilised at around 70-80 breeding pairs, making every sighting meaningful.

Combine the vulture viewing with a visit to the Blue Cave, Lubenice beach, and Cres town for a full-day nature and culture adventure.
