Island of Rab - Italian Charm

Medieval town with four bells

About Rab — Island of Italian Charm

Rab is the crown jewel of the Kvarner islands — a place where medieval architecture, sandy beaches and Mediterranean vegetation come together in a setting that feels more Italian than Croatian. The island's signature silhouette — four ancient bell towers rising above terracotta rooftops — is one of the most photographed views in the Adriatic.

Rab town is a beautifully preserved medieval settlement built on a narrow peninsula jutting into the sea. Three parallel streets run the length of the old town, connected by steep stone stairways, and lined with Romanesque churches, noble palaces, and small squares where you can sit with a coffee and watch the boats pass below.

The island has a fascinating microclimate: the northeastern side, facing the mainland and the fierce bora wind, is barren and lunar-looking, while the southwestern side — sheltered by a mountain ridge — is lush with pine forests, holm oak groves and some of the rarest sandy beaches in Croatia. This dramatic contrast is visible from your boat as you approach the island.

What to See and Do

The four bell towers of Rab are the island's most iconic feature. The tallest belongs to the Cathedral of the Assumption and offers panoramic views across the old town, harbour and surrounding islands. Each tower was built in a different century, creating a living timeline of architectural history visible from a single viewpoint.

Paradise Beach (Rajska plaža), about 3 km from the old town, is one of the few genuine sandy beaches in Croatia — a rarity on the predominantly rocky Adriatic coast. The fine sand, shallow water and sheltered position make it perfect for families, though it can get busy in July and August.

Supetarska Draga is a quiet bay on the island's northern coast, backed by olive groves and pine forest. It offers a more peaceful alternative to Paradise Beach with clean pebble shores and excellent snorkelling.

Komrčar park is a beautiful green space just outside the old town walls, with shaded walking paths through Mediterranean pine forest leading to viewpoints over the sea. It was created in the 19th century and is home to some of the oldest trees on the island.

For history enthusiasts, Rab is associated with the founding of San Marino — according to legend, a stonemason from Rab named Marinus fled to Monte Titano in 301 AD and founded what is now the world's oldest republic.

Trip Details from Opatija

The boat ride from Ičići to Rab takes approximately 40–45 minutes by speedboat, making it our most distant but arguably most rewarding destination. We recommend a full-day trip of 7–8 hours to do the island justice.

The ideal itinerary: depart Ičići in the morning and enjoy the scenic crossing past Cres and through the Kvarner strait. Arrive at Rab town harbour — docking right below the medieval walls is an unforgettable arrival. Spend the morning exploring the old town — climb a bell tower, walk the three streets, visit the cathedral. Have lunch at a waterfront restaurant with views of the old town silhouette.

After lunch, cruise to Paradise Beach or Supertarska Draga for afternoon swimming. If time allows, explore some of the hidden coves on the island's western coast before the return trip. The journey back offers spectacular sunset views across Kvarner Bay.

Rab is our premium full-day destination and is particularly popular with couples and history lovers. The combination of the medieval old town, sandy beaches and the dramatic boat approach makes it an unforgettable day trip from Opatija.
